Pub-Style Onion Rings Right From Home

If you love restaurant-style onion rings, you’re going to go crazy for these delicious homemade ones!

Once a week, my husband and I always go out to dinner, just the two of us. It’s something that we used to do a lot before we had kids. After we had our first baby, things kind of stalled out for a while. It wasn’t good for our relationship. We missed those nights. So, we vowed to bring them back. It doesn’t have to be a big fancy dinner. Just something that we can do together without the chaos of what our home life can be sometimes.

Whenever we go somewhere that they serve onion rings, we share an order of them. They are both of our favorites. I decided that we didn’t have to wait to go out to eat them. I wanted to learn how to make them at home.

With this recipe that I found, now we can have them whenever we want. A lot of the times, they are better tasting than the ones we pay for while we are out. You’ll have to check out the recipe to see what I am talking about. It’s on the next page!

Pub-Style Onion Rings Right From Home

Total time about 20 mins

Serves 3

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Morton salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk, or as needed
  • 3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • Lawry's seasoned salt to taste
  • 1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

PREPARATION

  1. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  2. Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  3. Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  4. Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

QUICK TIP

Serve with ketchup or BBQ sauce for dipping.
